For those who really like sweet food, you may also top the pudding off with a drizzle of coconut cream or a mild fruit such as bananas. This is a traditional recipe my friend's mother brought with her from Thailand. Some of the ingredients might be hard to find in areas without Chinese or Asian supermarkets. There are a number of online retailers that carry these ingredients.

In this attractive salad, full-flavoured shiitake and chestnut mushrooms are combined with slices of tender griddled duck, juicy orange segments, crunchy water chestnuts and rice, with a fresh ginger and honey dressing. Duck meat is in fact very lean, once the thick layer of fat and skin has been removed.

Basmati rice cooks so quickly that it can be boiled and then added to a speedy stir-fry. Nuts and seeds make this a complete meal but it's also a great side dish for grilled meats or fish. Delicious!

These rice cakes are absolutely delicious and have crunchy crust with light, moist interiors. The ginger, coconut milk and sweet potatoes make the sauce absolutely yummy. You can replace the orange juice with water if you like.

Flavoured with garlic, ginger and chilli, this tempting dish with thin and tender strips of lean beef and juicy prawns is a variation on the classic ‘Nasi Goreng’. It's perfect for a relaxed lunch as much of the dish can be prepared ahead.

Japanese food tends to be low in fat, and these stylish sushi rolls are no exception. Now that the ingredients are available in supermarkets, it is easy to make them yourself. You must use sushi rice, which is sticky when cooked.
