I made this up one day. It takes a lot of work, but makes a lot of stew, and the leftovers just taste better and better each time you try it.

Kolache are Czech biscuits traditionally made with a yeast dough and fruit filling. In this version a non-yeasted dough is used.

This is a filling, tasty chicken soup that I love to make.

This recipe is the next best thing to a bakery babka! Although babkas are traditionally yeast-risen breads, this one is more similar to a sweet quick bread or cake.

This cake was traditionally a birthday cake in my friend's home. Her mother is from Hungary and only has this recipe in her head! Now it will be preserved . . . Note: hazelnuts may be toasted or un-toasted. The skins may be removed or left on.

Summer is the time when we can forget about tinned fruit and preserves, and can finally enjoy the full, rich flavour of fresh fruits. This is a great fruity, juicy sponge cake made from lots of real apricots with a gentle hint of honey. Fabulous for sweetening up mid-summer tea time!

This authentic, warming Hungarian stew is perfect for cold days. Serve with rice, egg noodles or dumplings.

This classic dish is warming and delicious. My mum made this when we were children, and we loved it. Can be made with cheaper cuts of beef, and comes out very tender. If it gets too thick, add a little water while it's cooking. Garnish with crème fraîche or soured cream.

This lentil soup recipe is based on a traditional Hungarian recipe which uses paprika for flavour. We eat it on New Years day to symbolise good financial fortune for the coming year.

Minced turkey and mushrooms make succulent meatballs – delicious simmered in a sauce of smooth passata with red and green peppers. Paprika warms the dish and new potatoes turn it into a complete one-pot meal.

This is a basic recipe for the traditional Czech pastry. They can be made with a variety of fillings, but this one uses your favourite jam. My preference is for a good quality apricot preserve.

Pork chops, mushrooms and onions in a creamy soured cream sauce. A richly satisfying, yet simple, midweek supper.

This is a wonderfully simple, yet delicious cake! It is so moist and fresh, it will surely be a favourite with your family, just like it is with mine! The main length of the preparation time is cutting and peeling the apples. A mixture of apples works great, although I usually use Golden Delicious.

An elderly lady residing in Turkey served this to a friend of ours while he was in that country several years ago. She has since passed away, but her recipe lives on. It is the best Borscht recipe I've ever enjoyed. Serve topped with soured cream, extra dill and chopped fresh tomatoes.

A traditional fish dish from Russia, this is made with poached salmon, rice and mushrooms. The updated version here uses crisp filo rather than the usual puff pastry. As all the preparation can be done ahead of time, a koulibiac is an ideal dinner party dish. All it needs with it are some colourful steamed vegetables.

This cake is very light, tender and tasty. It's fun to make and fun to eat. Two layers of soured cream poppy seed cake, with a luscious lemon filling. Ice with a buttercream icing if desired.
