Perfect for feeding a crowd at a summer barbecue, this is a tasty twist on the classic American recipe for baked beans. The variety of beans used gives the dish great flavour, along with the streaky bacon. Try this for a break from the ordinary. If you don't have French's mustard to hand, substitute half a tablespoon of English mustard.

I bought a similar spread at the supermarket awhile back, and I thought that I could do it better and cheaper myself. I use tinned artichoke hearts, though you can buy fresh artichokes and cook them yourself.

This is a bit of an embellishment on the usual neeps and tatties. Omit the parsnips and substitute more swede if you'd like.

This salad is fruity, high in fibre and full of flavour. It makes a lovely presentation. Use soya yoghurt to make this dish vegan.

Slightly sweet butternut squash topped with a savoury herbed cheese and breadcrumb topping. It's been a signature dish for the last 12 years. It takes a bit of work, but it is so, so worth it. Your guests will ask you for the recipe, so be prepared.

Any winter squash or combination of winter squash can be used. A nice substitute for mashed potatoes.

Chinese-style green beans with lots of flavour! This recipe is made for a large party; but it can be scaled down for a family dinner. Serve cold or warm.

This is a nice change from the usual coleslaw and the tangy vinaigrette is one you will want to make over and over! Goes well with pork.

I like to serve this cool, refreshing raita with my Lamb Tagine, which you can find on this site. Make the salad early in the day and keep in the refrigerator to let the flavours blend and intensify. Add more mint to taste, but do not substitute dried mint; the flavour is just not the same.

In Denmark it is traditional to serve a cooked pickled red cabbage for the Christmas Eve dinner. This is my mum's, and it is so easy to make and will be a great side dish to any roast duck, turkey or goose. When reheating, I like to add a tablespoon of black currant jam to enhance the flavour.
