    About this recipe: This is a richly flavoured French toast recipe. Make it the night before, then bake in the morning. Especially nice for a special ending to a brunch. The Grand Marnier makes this dish!

    Serves: 6 

    • 110g unsalted butter
    • 220g dark brown soft sugar
    • 2 tablespoons golden syrup
    • 6 slices French bread
    • 5 eggs
    • 350ml single cream
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier)
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt

    1. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Mix in dark brown soft sugar and golden syrup, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Pour into a 20x30cm baking dish.
    2. Remove crusts from bread, and arrange in the baking dish in a single layer. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, cream, vanilla extract, orange liqueur and salt. Pour over the bread. Cover, and chill at least 8 hours, or overnight.
    3. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Remove the dish from the refrigerator, and bring to room temperature.
    4. Bake uncovered 35 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, until puffed and lightly browned.
