About this recipe: A bread machine recipe for delicious savoury bread made with courgette, sesame seeds and basil.

Serves: 10 

  • 100ml (4 fl oz) water
  • 1 dessertspoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 75g (3 oz) grated courgette
  • 75g (3 oz) wholemeal flour
  • 275g (10 oz) bread flour
  • small handful chopped fresh basil
  • 1 dessertspoon sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried active baking yeast

  1. Place ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the order suggested by the manufacturer. Set for Basic Bread cycle, or Normal setting.

Altered ingredient amounts. This bread is lovely! I don't have a bread maker so I doubled the recipe and did it this way: Add the honey to warm water and sprinkle the yeast on top. Let proof for 10 minutes then add the salt, oil, courgette, seeds and seasoning. I added 1 1/2 tsp of dried basil and a tsp of rosemary like someone else suggested, then flour. Let rise for 1 hour, punch down and divide into 2 loaves and let rise again in bread tins for 45 minutes. Bake for 35 minutes. Brush tops with olive oil after it comes out of the oven and EAT!!! 2nd batch: Doubled it again and used only 1 tsp of salt, 2 tsp of italian herbs and 2 tbsp of sesame seeds, and a little less courgette. It rose much higher this time. - 14 Jul 2008


Used different ingredients. I used malt extract instead of honey, and dried basil instead of fresh. Very yummy bread! - 18 Jul 2010


The flavour was incredible but it didn't rise very well. Next time I'm going to try with 2 teaspoons of yeast rather than 1 1/2. Other than being a bit dense it was wonderful. - 24 Aug 2011
