Peppered Cottage Pie

    A deliciously different beef pie. Peppered beef steak, minced beef and red wine sauce is topped with creamy mash, then baked to perfection.

    Serves: 8 

    • 500g minced beef
    • 500g peppered beef steaks, cut into chunks
    • 2 medium onions, chopped
    • 2 large carrots, chopped
    • 250ml good red wine
    • 150g frozen peas
    • 1 stick celery, chopped
    • 6 large potatoes, peeled and chopped
    • 2 teaspoons finely chopped garlic
    • 2 tablespoons tomato puree
    • 1 tablespoon oregano
    • 2 tablespoons ground black pepper
    • 1 pinch sea salt
    • 250ml gravy
    • oil as needed
    • 15g butter
    • 2 tablespoons whole mustard seeds
    • milk as needed

    1. Bring a large pot of water to the boil. Cook potatoes over high heat until tender.
    2. Meanwhile, brown onions, celery and carrots in a pan with oil. Add minced beef and steak. Cook until half of the beef is brown.
    3. Stir in red wine and cook for 1 minute. Stir in gravy, tomato puree, oregano and peas. If the sauce is too dry, add water. Cook for 15 minutes.
    4. Drain potatoes and place back into cooking pot. Add butter and mustard seeds. Use an electric mixer to mash the potatoes, adding enough milk to get a light and creamy mash.
    5. Spread beef mixture into a baking dish. Cover with mashed potato. Decorate the top of the mash with a fork. Bake in a preheated 180 C / Gas 4 oven for 45 minutes or until the mash begins to brown.
