Use a funnel that has about a 5cm neck. This will make it easier to fill the jar with the ingredients. Be sure to use a wide-mouth, 1 litre preserving jar.
Layer ingredients in the order given: stock, onion, split peas, small shaped pasta, barley, lentils, rice and enough tricolour pasta to fill jar.
Attach tag with cooking instructions: In large saucepan, brown 450g minced beef in a little olive oil. Remove tricolour pasta from top of jar and reserve. Add the rest of the jar contents to the saucepan with 1.5 litres water. Bring to the boil and simmer 45 minutes. Add tricolour pasta and simmer 15 minutes more. Serve with your favourite bread or rolls and a tossed salad.
