About this recipe: A super-delicious pulled beef sandwich. Steak is pan-seared, then cooked in a slow cooker with a sweet and tangy tomato sauce. The steak is then shredded and served in toasted burger buns.

    Ingredients
    Makes: 6

    • 675g sirloin steak
    • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 4 tablespoons dark brown soft sugar
    • 1 small onion, chopped
    • 1 small red pepper, chopped
    • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 500g passata
    • 2 tablespoons tomato puree
    • 6 burger buns or baps, split in half

    Method
    Prep:10min  ›  Cook:4hr5min  ›  Ready in:4hr15min

    1. Sprinkle the steak with steak seasoning on both sides. Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat until the oil shimmers and place the steak into the hot oil. Quickly brown the steak on both sides, about 5 minutes per side. Set the steak aside.
    2. Stir dark brown soft sugar, onion, red pepper, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, passata and tomato puree together in a slow cooker until the dark brown soft sugar dissolves. Place the steak into the slow cooker, immersing it in the sauce. Set the cooker on on High and cook 4 hours or set on Low and cook 8 hours.
    3. To serve, shred the steak with 2 forks or remove the steak and chop and return to the sauce. Toast burger buns or baps and serve the steak on the toasted buns.

Tried it but I think my slow cooker is the issue. Hand me down from Mum circa 1960's. So will try again!  -  02 Oct 2016

this was REALLY good!! About 3/4 way through the cooking time I took the steak out to chop it and almost threw it out, the sauce looked so watery and lacked flavor. but i went ahead and chopped the meat up and let it cook another hour and a half. so glad i did because it ended up being delicious. DH loved it. Only thing I did different was double the tomato paste, because i had a can and didn't want to waste it. also added an extra tablespoon of sugar to balance out the extra paste. Would have rather had it over noodles or rice instead of sandwiches, but that's personal preference and i will make it that way next time. thanks for sharing.  -  31 Aug 2010  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)

Honestly, I'm not crazy about crock pot recipes, but this is one I most likely will make again. The shredded meat remained tough after 7 hours on high, so I cooked it another 1-1/2 hours. IMO the tomato flavor really dominates the sauce, almost overpowering the flavor of the beef. I think some fresh chopped garlic and maybe even a little soy sauce would add some tang to this. Served on AR's Hamburger Buns along with cole slaw and baked beans. Overall, a solid crock pot recipe.  -  15 Jan 2012  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)
