Beef ribs in BBQ sauce

    A Korean-inspired spare rib dish. Beef ribs are marinated, then stir-fried with garlic, onions, spring onions and barbecue sauce, before being garnished with roasted sesame seeds.

    Serves: 4 

    • 8 beef short ribs, chopped into 2.5cm pieces
    • Marinade
    • 1 tablespoon Japanese soy sauce (tamari)
    • 1 tablespoon cooking sake
    • 1 teaspoon caster sugar
    • 1 teaspoons cornflour
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon oil
    • 1 tablespoon oil
    • 1/2 tablespoon finely chopped garlic
    • 1 medium onion, sliced
    • 2 spring onions, chopped
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • Sauce
    • 4 tablespoons Korean barbecue sauce
    • 2 teaspoons cornflour, mixed with 2 tablespoons water
    • 2 teaspoons roasted sesame

    1. Marinate the beef short ribs in soy sauce, cooking sake, sugar, cornflour, black pepper and oil for 20 minutes.
    2. Heat a large frying pan with 1 tablespoon oil over high heat. Stir-fry the garlic until aromatic, about 2-3 minutes. Add the onion, spring onions and salt and stir-fry until soft, 3-4 minutes.
    3. Add the beef ribs and cook until 70% done, about 4-5 minutes. Mix in the Korean barbecue sauce and cornflour slurry and heat through for 2-3 minutes. Serve garnished with roasted sesame seeds.


    Beef short ribs are available at your local butchers. You may need to pre-order them. You can also ask them to chop them into 2.5cm pieces.

    Japanese soy sauce, cooking sake and Korean barbecue sauce can be purchased in Oriental speciality stores.
