Date Crumble Squares
Simple treats I've always loved.
Ingredients
Serves: 8
- Filling
- 150g chopped dates
- 60ml cold water
- 25g sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
- Crumble
- 175g self-raising flour
- 150g margarine
- 100g oats
- 150g sugar

- Heat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a large square tin.
- Place all filling ingredients in pan, and heat gently until mixture forms paste. Add more water if required. Leave mixture to cool.
- Rub margarine into flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in oats and sugar, and mix well. place half the crumble mixture into the greased tray. Press down firmly. Smooth filling evenly over. Leave a small gap to the edge of tin. Spread remaining crumble evenly over the top.
- Bake for 40 - 45 minutes until golden brown.

Really tasty, easy recipe. I love dates, so might increase the filling by 50% next time. Also, I added a pinch of salt to the crumble mix. Yummy! Would even be good in a big slab with custard- like school dinners - 07 Mar 2013

I made this today,and although i've made date slice before,it was many years ago,and i'd forgotten the recipe. I tried this one,as it has 5 stars,but the ratio of filling to crumble is all wrong.Far too little filling.I used a baking tray and pressed the excess crumble,to make lovely biscuits.The date slice is just ok. - 03 Apr 2015
