About this recipe: This is a popular Chinese dish, which is made by bashing the cucumber, before slicing and tossing it with a wonderful dressing. Enjoy as a cold starter.


Serves: 3 - 4

  • 2 cucumbers
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • chopped coriander to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vinegar

  1. Place the cucumbers on a chopping board. Bash the cucumbers hard with the flat side of a cleaver few times. Then chop crosswise into 2.5cm sections.
  2. In a salad bowl, mix the garlic, salt, monosodium glutamate, coriander, sugar and vinegar to form the salad dressing.
  3. Add the cucumber pieces into the dressing and toss well. Marinate for about 10 minutes. Serve.
