Homemade black bean burgers

    Spiced with chilli sauce, cumin, garlic and chilli powder, these quick and easy black bean burgers are a tasty and healthy vegetarian alternative to beefburgers.

    Serves: 4 

    • 1 (400g) tin black beans, drained and rinsed
    • 1/2 green pepper, quartered
    • 1/2 onion, halved
    • 3 cloves garlic, peeled
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tablespoon chilli powder
    • 1 tablespoon cumin
    • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
    • 50g (2 oz) dried breadcrumbs

    1. Preheat oven to 190 C / Gas mark 5, and lightly oil a baking tray.
    2. In a medium bowl, mash black beans with a fork until thick and pasty.
    3. In a food processor, finely chop green pepper, onion and garlic. Stir into mashed beans.
    4. In a small bowl, stir together egg, chilli powder, cumin and hot pepper sauce.
    5. Stir the egg mixture into the mashed beans. Mix in breadcrumbs until the mixture is sticky and holds together. Divide mixture into four patties.
    6. Place patties on baking tray, and bake about 10 minutes on each side.

    These are some of the worst burgers I have ever had, horrible texture, very dry and tasteless, just mashed beans with a ton of spices basically. Also, don't expect a burger to come out of the oven. Just a pile of flakey chunks.  -  22 Apr 2014


    I removed the excess water from the green pepper / onion mix which really made the patties stay together and also added extra breadcrumbs. I think this is a great base recipe that you can get creative with - Having said that, I enjoyed them as per the recipe as well  -  21 Jun 2016
