Steak and ale stew

    This beef and ale stew recipe is really easy and does not require many ingredients. The end result is delicious. This stew is perfect served with a wild rice blend, mashed potatoes, creamy polenta or simply loads of crusty bread.

    Serves: 4 

    • 50g butter
    • 1kg stewing steak, cut into long strips
    • salt and pepper to taste
    • 2 onions, sliced
    • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 1 tablespoon plain flour
    • 100ml beef stock
    • 5 carrots, sliced
    • 600ml beer

    1. Melt the butter in a large saucepan and saute the beef. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.
    2. Cook the onions for a few minutes over medium heat until tender, stirring constantly. Add salt and pepper, nutmeg and flour. Cook for 1 more minute stirring constantly. Add the stock, bring to the boil and deglaze the bottom of the saucepan.
    3. Add the meat, carrots and beer.
    4. Cover and simmer for about 2 hours and 15 minutes until the beef is very tender.

    Something else. There are only two of us so I altered the amount of carrots. The real reason for TWEAKING is that I used Baxter's French Onion Soup and a small can of Guinness. I also added mushrooms. Did not add salt. It was DELICIOUS!  -  18 Nov 2010


    This stew was easy to make and was very delicious. Added 4 potatoes to mine to pad it out a bit. Yum!  -  24 Mar 2011
