Spiced Almond Hearts

    These Christmas biscuits can be enjoyed all year round. They are buttery, crunchy, sweet and lightly spiced with cinnamon and aniseed. They are also great for Valentine's day.

    Serves: 40 

    • For the Biscuit
    • 150g plain flour
    • 100g caster sugar
    • 25g honey
    • 65g butter
    • 1 egg yolk
    • 1 pinch salt
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon aniseed powder
    • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
    • For the Topping
    • 1 egg white
    • 2 tablespoons honey
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar
    • 1 tablespoon icing sugar
    • 100g almonds

    1. Using an electric mixer with a dough hook, knead all the biscuit ingredients into a dough. Cover and chill for 3 hours.
    2. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Line a baking tray with baking parchment.
    3. Cut the dough into four portions and roll them out. Cut 10 heart shaped biscuits from each and transfer to the prepared tray.
    4. Beat egg white until stiff and add the honey, vanilla sugar and icing sugar. Fold in almonds. Place some of the topping on each heart and smooth out.
    5. Bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

    Aniseed powder

    If your local supermarket doesn't stock aniseed powder, you can find it Chinese/Oriental speciality shops or online.
