Pizza with beer and tomato sauce

    This is a pizza that features something different - a hearty sauce made of passata, bacon, pepperoni, green pepper, spices and beer. The combination of flavours is a winner. Use shop-bought pizza bases or use your favourite pizza dough recipe.

    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 225g pepperoni, diced
    • 450g bacon, diced
    • 1/3 (300g) tin chopped mushrooms, drained
    • 1 onion, chopped
    • 1 green pepper, chopped
    • 800g passata
    • 250ml beer
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 2 unbaked pizza bases
    • 250g grated mozzarella cheese

    1. Preheat oven to 230 C / Gas 8.
    2. Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat, and saute the pepperoni and bacon until evenly browned. Mix in the mushrooms, onion, and green pepper. Cook and stir about 5 minutes, until tender.
    3. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, mix the ingredients from the frying pan with the passata and beer. Season with garlic, oregano, thyme and salt. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 15 minutes, until slightly thickened. Spread sauce over the 2 pizza bases, and top with cheese.
    4. Bake 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until the cheese is melted and the crust is golden brown.

    This pizza is so good that since we tried it Pizza night is not the same. For those that found this pizza grease I have a little change to share: Instead of the pepperoni use extra lean ground beef you may add a little extra flavor by using red and green peppers chopped. One more trick is to let the sauce cool down before adding to the crust so that the crust doesn't become soggy while baking.  -  07 Feb 2005  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)


    I made this pizza on Monday night and was so thrilled with the flavor! My husband and I loved it! You can add any topping, but the flavors meld together so well and it is a hearty, homemade treat! I will make this pizza recipe on a regular basis. Thanks for the recipe!
