About this recipe: This is my favourite bread recipe for the bread machine. This bread is made with part plain flour, part wholemeal flour, and is flavoured with just a bit of treacle for a lovely colour and ever so slight sweetness.

Serves: 12

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons treacle
  • 180ml warm milk
  • 4 1/2 tablespoons warm water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried active baking yeast
  • 280g plain flour
  • 100g wholemeal flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

Prep:15min  ›  Cook:3hr  ›  Ready in:3hr15min

  1. Place ingredients in the bread machine pan in the order suggested by the manufacturer. Select Basic or White Bread. Press Start.

The proportion of milk and water to flour is completely wrong. The bread didn't rise. I ended up with something which resembled treacle cake more than treacle bread. Also, there is far too much treacle being used in this recipe. There is supposed to be a hint of treacle in treacle bread but the flavour here is far too strong. I would suggest using more bread flour and less treacle to improve the recipe. I will try this recipe again and once I get it right I will post a new recipe. - 12 Apr 2014
