    About this recipe: Butterkuchen is a very simple yeasted cake that is marvellous with a cup of freshly brewed coffee. Try adding a little more cinnamon to the topping if you like cinnamon! Enjoy this wonderful German recipe.

    Serves: 24 

    • 2 (7g) sachets dried active baking yeast
    • 120ml warm water
    • 175ml milk
    • 100g caster sugar
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 110g butter
    • 500g plain flour
    • 3 eggs
    • 110g butter
    • 200g caster sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    1. Butter a 20x30cm tin and set aside. In a small mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
    2. Place milk, 100g sugar, salt and 110g butter in saucepan. Heat until sugar dissolves and butter melts. Cool to lukewarm. Add dissolved yeast and set aside.
    3. In large bowl combine flour, eggs and yeast mixture. Stir until smooth and blended. Pour into a prepared tin, spreading dough evenly. Let rise in warm place for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 190 C / Gas 5.
    4. In a small bowl, combine 110g butter, 200g sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. mix together and sprinkle over the dough. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the top is golden and syrupy.
