Easy funnel cakes

    20 min

These are tasty little flat fried cakes that taste best served warm and dusted with icing sugar. They are made from a batter similar to a pancake mix, which is poured through a funnel (or very wide nozzle) to create circular ribbons that are deep-fried to hold them together. Delicious!

    Serves: 12

    • 1 egg
    • 150ml milk, or as needed
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 2 tablespoons caster sugar
    • 165g sifted plain flour
    • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1 litre vegetable oil for frying
    • 2 tablespoons icing sugar for dusting

    Prep:10min  ›  Cook:10min  ›  Ready in:20min

    1. Beat egg. Mix in milk. Sift flour, salt, caster sugar and baking powder; beat into egg mixture until smooth, adding a little more milk if the mixture is too thick.
    2. Pour oil into a heavy pan until it is 2.5cm deep. Heat to 190 C.
    3. Pour the batter through a funnel into the oil with a circular motion to form a spiral. Fry until golden brown in colour; turn over to cook the other side. Remove each funnel cake as it is cooked; drain on kitchen paper. Repeat with remaining batter.
    4. Dust with icing sugar while still warm.

Snip the corner off a disposable piping bag to use in place of a funnel; fill with a small amount of batter and squeeze gently.

Loved this recipe, particularly as in the UK it's a super rare treat to have funnel cakes (and I *love* them). The recipe was nice and easy to use and as we'd already bought a funnel cake pourer very easy get that traditional look too. The only tweak I made was cinammon and sugar (I'm a big sweet tooth) As you can see from my photo's, we themed ours up for a USA Classic Movie night we were having at home!  -  17 Feb 2017

Made this recipe for my kids last night and they were a hit! I did have to add more milk as it was a bit thick and I also added more sugar to make the batter a bit sweeter. With that they turned out just like the funnel cakes you get at the fairs/carnivals, etc! They were delicious and very easy to make.  -  24 Aug 2005  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)

I Think that is was great all it really needs like everyone say more milk and more sugar.  -  01 Oct 2006  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)
