Turkey and beef pasta sauce

    A deliciously simple tomato-based pasta sauce that's made in the slow cooker with minced turkey, beef mince, turkey sausages and green pepper.

    • 800g passata
    • 2 (400g) tins chopped tomatoes
    • 170g tomato puree
    • 285g tomato based pasta sauce
    • 225g turkey kielbasa, chopped
    • 4 tablespoons extra-light olive oil
    • 3 onions, chopped
    • 6 yellow summer squash, diced
    • 1 small green pepper, finely chopped
    • 3 cloves garlic, pressed
    • 225g extra-lean minced beef
    • 225g extra-lean minced turkey breast
    • 5 bay leaves
    • 15 whole black peppercorns
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
    • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
    • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

    1. In a slow cooker, combine passata, chopped tomatoes, tomato puree, tomato sauce and kielbasa. Set slow cooker to High.
    2. Heat olive oil in a large, deep frying pan over medium heat. Cook onions, yellow squash, green pepper and garlic in oil until onions are translucent. Transfer vegetables to the slow cooker.
    3. Place minced beef and minced turkey in a large, deep frying pan. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble finely and transfer to slow cooker. Season with bay leaves, peppercorns, basil, marjoram, thyme and oregano.
    4. Cover and cook on High for 2 hours. Remove lid and cook 1 hour more.


    Kielbasa are Polish smoked sausages and can be found in Polish delis. If unavailable, use Mattessons smoked sausage instead.
    Yellow summer squash look like yellow courgettes. If unavailable, use courgettes instead.
