About this recipe: My grannie's brown wheaten bread. Often referred to as soda bread outside Ireland. It is very easy to make.

Serves: 4

  • 300g wholemeal flour
  • 200g plain flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda or bread soda
  • 300ml buttermilk

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6.
  2. Mix dry ingredients. Add enough buttermilk to make a fairly soft dough.
  3. Turn onto a floured board and knead until smooth. Flatten the dough into a round about 5cm thick. Place on a floured baking tin and score on top with a cross.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 180 C / Gas 4 and bake for an additional 20 minutes.
  5. Remove from the oven and knock on the base of the loaf; if it sounds hollow it is done. Otherwise give it another 5 to 10 minutes.
