    About this recipe: Chilli, chocolate and cinnamon - very strong and warming combination, going on extremely well with braised beef. Served with crushed potatoes - simply delicious!!!

    Ingredients
    Serves: 6 

    • 4 teaspoons olive oil
    • 2 onions, chopped
    • 150g bacon, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
    • 2 fresh chilli peppers, chopped
    • 1.5kg beef (ideally braising steak)
    • 2 tablespoons flour
    • 600ml beef stock
    • 1 (400g) tin peeled chopped tomatoes
    • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 1 teaspoon chilli powder
    • 50g plain chocolate

    Method

    1. Preheat oven to 160 C / Gas 2 1/2. Heat oil in the pan, cook onion and bacon, add garlic and chilli pepper and cook for another couple of minutes. Move into a large casserole pot.
    2. Dice the beef, coat with flour and cook until brown. Add more oil if necessary. Move into a casserole pot.
    3. Stir stock into a pan, simmer for a minute and add to the pot together with tomatoes, sugar, cinnamon stick and chilli powder. Bring to boil.
    4. Move into the preheated oven and braise for 1 1/2 hours until soft.
    5. Remove from the oven, stir in the chocolate, let it melt and serve with rice or crushed or mashed potatoes. Lovely!

    This went down an absolute treat with a gang of hungry hikers! Rich and delicious - even my two year old liked it. (I used a handful of dried red chili flakes rather than two fresh chilies, due to toddler- and mum-in-law palette!) Served it with soft rolls, corn on the cob and peach cobbler... Am planning to make it again for a staff BBQ over the Aug bank holiday. :-) - 19 Aug 2013
