    About this recipe: Perfect for those chilly grey days when you need to get out early and come home to a warm delicious smell. You can adjust to suit tastes and budget and number of servings.

    • 900g boneless gammon joint
    • 1 bottle or tin ginger beer
    • grated root ginger to taste (optional)
    • 1 tablespoon dark brown soft sugar (optional)

    1. Put everything into the slow cooker and set to high. Leave to cook for up to 8 hours.

    Serving suggestion

    I strongly advise serving shredded with mash potatoes and butter beans with parsley sauce.

    This is a great recipe! I personally didn't add the extra ginger or sugar as I thought it might be a bit too sweet. I put some bacon ribs underneath the joint of gammon which added to the flavour. My partner turned the slow cooker on before he went to work at 4am, it cooked all day and then I finished it off in the oven for half an hour. Served it with mash and was delicious!!     Very simple and nice result. Ginger flavour was very subtle, despite putting in a full can of ginger beer and about about 1.5 inches cubed of root ginger. The meat was very tender and tasty. Used unsmoked gammon and didn't pre-boil (as is often done to remove saltiness) - meat wasn't noticeably salty in the end so would do the same again next time.  -  17 Jan 2016
