Beef with Mushroom and Onion Gravy

About this recipe: The gravy for this dish is so rich and flavourful that it's even delicious on it's own over mashed potatoes or rice.


Serves: 4 

  • 300g thinly sliced beef
  • Pinch salt
  • Pinch black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon white wine
  • 1 tablespoon plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon chopped garlic
  • 150g oyster mushrooms, sliced
  • 5 tablespoons tomato ketchup
  • 5 tablespoons tomato passata or sieved tomatoes
  • 5 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons red wine
  • 1/2 chicken stock cube
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cream

  1. Sprinkle a pinch of salt, a bit of black pepper, and 1 tablespoon white wine over beef, and rub in by hand.
  2. Lightly coat the beef slices in flour.
  3. Melt the butter in a frying pan, add floured beef. When browned, add chopped garlic and onion slices. When onion has cooked, add the mushrooms and continue to cook over gentle heat.
  4. Mix together tomato ketchup, tomato passata, water, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, red wine and 1/2 of a chicken stock cube. Stir to dissolve stock cube.
  5. Pour over beef and onions, cover and allow to come to the boil. Turn off heat, add 1 tablespoon cream and stir well.
