Cheesy chicken burgers

About this recipe: Chicken burgers made with Cheddar cheese and red pepper. Nice alternative to beef burgers and the cheese and pepper give them a lovely taste.

Makes: 6 burgers

  • 1/2 tablespoon sunflower oil
  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped or crushed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 red pepper, finely chopped
  • 450g chicken or turkey mince
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yoghurt or beaten egg
  • 1 tablespoon mixed herbs
  • 50g Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper
  • 50g brown breadcrumbs (1 slice)

  1. Heat the oil in the frying pan and gently cook the garlic and onion for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the pepper and fry for a further 5 minutes.
  3. Place the chicken, yoghurt, onion mixture, herbs and cheese in a bowl and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Add the breadcrumbs and mix well. If you are using sliced bread rather than bought breadcrumbs, whizz in a food processor or tear in half and rub together until fine.
  5. Divide into 6 balls and shape into burgers. Chill for 20 minutes.
  6. Place under a medium grill for about 8 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through.


You can use egg yolks instead of the Greek yoghurt like I did, as you are more likely to have the ingredients already and 2 tablespoons of Greek yoghurt is a bit of a waste if that is all you are buying it for.


You could also BBQ these burgers or bake them in the oven. I have not baked them before but I would imagine 15 to 20 minutes on a baking tray at 180 C until browned should do.
