2 firm oranges
2cm piece root ginger, peeled and sliced in half lengthways
1 cinnamon stick
2 bottles red wine, I use a Cabernet Sauvignon

In a large saucepan boil the water and dissolve the sugar in it.
While the water is boiling prepare the fruit. Finely zest the two oranges. Peel one and slice, then set the slices aside for garnish. Stick the 15 cloves into the other whole orange. Zest the lemon and slice in half.
When the sugar water is ready add the orange zest, orange peel, clove-studded orange, lemon zest, lemon halves, ginger and cinnamon. Stir.
Straightaway add the red wine then put on the lid and heat very gently on a very low heat for about 15 minutes. Do not boil.
Strain off the fruit and spices to serve. Serve each glass garnished with a slice of orange.
