Cheese and ham whirls

About this recipe: A quick flaky pastry snack, perfect for children and adults. Great in lunch boxes and in-between meals. I love them, because of the classic taste combination of ham and cheese.

Makes: 15 whirls

  • 200g plain flour
  • pinch salt
  • 150g butter
  • cold water
  • 3 to 6 slices ham
  • 50g grated Cheddar cheese

Prep:25min  ›  Cook:15min  ›  Extra time:30min chilling  ›  Ready in:1hr10min

  1. Put flour and salt into a mixing bowl.
  2. Hold butter by the foil and dip the end of it in the flour.
  3. Grate the butter into the bowl of flour.
  4. Use a palette knife or a round ended knife and coat each strand of butter with flour.
  5. Add enough cold water to make it come to a dough, and mix with a palette/round ended knife.
  6. Put in a polythene bag and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 220 C / Gas 7.
  8. After 30 minutes, take the dough out of the fridge, and sprinkle the work surfaces with flour.
  9. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough until thin. Roll into a rectangle.
  10. Lay the slices of ham on top of the dough and sprinkle the cheese on top.
  11. Roll up the dough, and cut into equal sized sections. Place on a greased baking tray.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.

Be careful that you don't roll out the pastry too thick. You can always use shop bought pastry to save time. Buy a puff pastry.
