Simple onion gravy

    A simple onion gravy made with beef stock. You could add dried herbs, such as thyme, if desired. Get loads of flavour with hardly any effort!

    Serves: 4 

    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
    • 1 tablespoon plain flour
    • 400ml hot beef stock, from a stock cube

    1. Heat the butter in a large frying pan. Add the onion and sprinkle with the sugar, then cook gently, stirring occasionally, for 10 to 15 minutes or until the onion is soft and lightly caramelised.
    2. Sprinkle the flour over the onion, stir and cook for 1 minute. Gradually stir in the stock. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and leave to simmer gently until thickened.

    had never made onion gravy before, so was a bit nervous that it'd go horribly wrong, but this recipe is so simple that it came out perfect and was so good i will be making it over and over  -  19 Apr 2012


    First time for making gravy, and it turned out well : ) The flour made it a bit lumpy, but I Smoothed it out  -  13 Aug 2012


    I can make lasagna, yiros, beef stew, and so much more but I couldn't make gravy. My grandmother made the best gravy but mine never tasted like anything close to gravy, well cardboard gravy sause was as close as I could get to it. Thank you so much for this recipe, I consider myself a well rounded cook now.  -  04 Jul 2013
