Grolle de Savoie (French flambéed spiced coffee)

    This traditional winter drink from the Savoy region in France is served in a special ornately carved wooden bowl with spouts and passed around at the table but you don't need a grolle to enjoy it.

    Ingredients
    Makes: 1 pitcher

    • 1 whole clove
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 1 lemon, scrubbed well and diced
    • 1 orange, scrubbed well and diced
    • 400ml freshly brewed hot coffee
    • icing sugar
    • 200ml schnapps or orange liqueur

    Method
    Prep:5min  ›  Cook:10min  ›  Extra time:2hr chilling  ›  Ready in:2hr15min 

    1. In a saucepan mix spices with lemon, orange and coffee. Sweeten to taste.
    2. Add schnapps and light with a match or a lighter and flambé while carefully stirring to incorporate the sugar. Strain into cups or heatproof glasses and serve at once.

    Tip

    If not serving it all at once, cover it with a lid to keep it warm.
