This is a nice moist cake, topped with apple slices that's very easy to make. See my suggestion below for using other fruits.
I sometimes make it with berries, plums or peaches when they are in season. If you decide to make it with berries, it might be better to separate the eggs; mix yolks in with other cake ingredients. Then beat whites until stiff and fold into the cake mixture before spooning it into the cake tin. This will help prevent the berries from sinking.
