Charlotte's steamed pudding

    This is a recipe I found in one of my grandma's old cookbooks. I think this is the one she used to cook for my dad all the time when he was young!

    Serves: 4 

    • 125g butter
    • 125g caster sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • 225g self-raising flour
    • pinch salt
    • 150ml milk
    • 4 tablespoons jam

    1. Cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy then beat in the eggs.
    2. Fold in the flour and salt alternately with the milk.
    3. Spoon jam in to the bottom of a well-greased heat proof basin then spoon batter on top.
    4. Cover the basin (I usually use foil) and place in a large pan half filled with hot water.
    5. Steam over a low heat for 1 1/2 - 2 hours or until a knife inserted in to centre comes out clean.


    Raspberry jam works particularly well for this but you could also use marmalade, syrup or other flavours of jam
