Amy's beautiful brown bread

    This brown bread recipe has been in the family for years. It is very simple to make and is lovely with homemade soup!

    Makes: 1 delicious loaf of brown bread

    • 250g wholemeal flour
    • 150g plain flour
    • 1 tablespoon wheat germ
    • 3/4 tablespoon wheat bran
    • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon dark soft brown sugar
    • 1 egg, beaten
    • 320ml buttermilk

    1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Rub a little bit of soft butter all around your baking tin to stop the bread from sticking.
    2. Measure out all dry ingredients and put them into a large bowl.
    3. Gently mix all the dry ingredients together and make a small well in the middle of the mix.
    4. Mix together the egg and buttermilk. Pour half of the liquid mixture into the well in the middle of the dry mix.
    5. Work the dry mix from the sides of the bowl into the middle. The mix will start to stick together, then slowly add the rest of the liquid mixture and bind until the liquid has gone into the mix. Put mix into the tin.
    6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, then take the bread out of the tin and place back onto oven rack and cook for another 20 minutes.
    7. Take out and leave to cool on a wire tray.
    8. Enjoy!!!

    Serving suggestion

    This brown bread is delicious when warmly buttered and a side for homemade soup.
