About this recipe: These savoury Cheddar scones are ready in a flash. A tried and tested recipe that's been around for ages, and for good reason! Use almost any other cheese you'd like to make these your own.

Makes: 8 scones

  • 225g (8 oz) plain flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 55g (2 oz) butter
  • 110g (4 oz) grated Cheddar cheese
  • 120ml (4 1/2 fl oz) milk
  • milk or beaten egg for glaze

  1. Preheat the oven to 220 C / Gas 7.
  2. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Rub in the butter until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Mix in the grated cheese, reserving a little for the top, and bind together with milk to make a soft dough.
  3. Gently roll out onto a floured surface and shape into a round. Place on a baking tin and cut into 8 triangles. Brush with milk or egg and sprinkle with remaining cheese.
  4. Bake near the top of the preheated oven until golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes.

made this today. Lovely light scones. A bit more dense due to cheese used in them but so very lush and tasty. Lovely to take to work for elevenses! - 01 Nov 2015
