An old recipe that we love! You can use normal granulated sugar instead of brown sugar but it won't have as toffee-ish a flavour.

900g brown sugar
1 tea cup (about 225ml) milk
1 tin (397g) condensed milk
125g walnuts
115g butter, melted
1 tablespoon vanilla essence

Combine the sugar and milk in a large heavy bottomed pot; heat until dissolved. Stir in the condensed milk and boil on a low heat for 20 minutes, stirring constantly.
Stir in walnuts, butter and vanilla essence and continue to boil for an additional 5 minutes. Carefully pour or spoon onto a flat buttered tin and leave to cool and set. Break into pieces.
