Homestyle chicken curry

    Chicken curry made the way it is usually made at my home. There are many Indian chicken recipes made at home - this is one of my favourite ones.

    Serves: 4 

    • 500g chicken
    • 100g natural yoghurt
    • 2 teaspoons chilli powder, or to taste
    • 1 teaspoon turmeric
    • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 2 teaspoons ginger garlic paste
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
    • 2 medium onions
    • 2 medium green chillies
    • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
    • 2 teaspoons chana dal
    • 4 inch piece coconut (optional)
    • 15g fresh coriander leaves
    • 2 teaspoons chicken masala spice mix (or to taste)
    • 1 to 2 tablespoons oil

    1. Wash the chicken pieces well.
    2. Mix the yoghurt, chilli powder, turmeric, cumin, ginger garlic paste and salt. Marinate the chicken in this mix and keep it in the fridge for an hour.
    3. In a dry frying pan, dry roast the green chilli, poppy seeds, chana dal, coconut and onions separately. Grind together the chilli, poppy seeds and dal (and coconut if using).
    4. Make a rough paste of the onion and coriander in the grinder.
    5. Heat oil in a pan, add the chilli mixture and cook for 2 minutes on a low flame.
    6. Put the onion-coriander paste in the pan and let it cook for about 5 minutes.
    7. Add the chicken to the pan and mix well. Let it cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Mix well again. Add the chicken masala mix and also pour in a cupful of water.
    8. Cover the pan and let it cook till the chicken is tender, about 30 minutes. Serve with chapati and raita.
