Preheat the oven to 160 C / Gas 3. Line a large loaf tin with baking parchment.
Place chopped dates in boiling water and let soak until soft, about 10 minutes. Mash with a fork and stir in orange juice.
Combine dried fruit, flour, ground almonds, baking powder, cinnamon, allspice, ginger, nutmeg and salt in a large bowl. Stir in date mixture and lemon zest. Turn into prepared tin; press whole almonds on top of cake mixture to make a decorative pattern.
Bake in the preheated oven until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean, about 90 minutes.
Instead of a loaf tin, you can bake this cake in a 20cm or 23cm square cake tin. Adjust baking time as needed.
