Biscuits in a jar
Layer all the ingredients necessary for making biscuits in a Kilner jar to give away as food gifts. Add your own special touch, like nuts or chocolate chips.
Ingredients
Makes: 24 biscuits
- 500g plain flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 300g caster sugar
- To make the biscuits
- 225g butter, at room temperature
- 1 egg
- 125ml soured cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- Combine flour with baking powder, bicarb, salt and nutmeg. In a clean 1 quart-sized jar with a wide mouth, layer sugar followed by flour mixture. Press firmly in place and seal. Attach a card with the following instructions:
- In a large bowl, beat 225g room-temperature butter until light and fluffy. Mix in 1 egg until combined. Add 125ml soured cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and blend at low speed. Gradually add contents of jar and mix until fully incorporated. Wrap biscuit dough in cling film and chill for several hours or overnight.
Remove dough from the fridge. Preheat oven to 190 C / Gas mark 5.
Roll chilled dough out on a lightly floured surface and cut into desired shapes. Place on an ungreased baking tray and bake in the preheated oven until edges are golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes.

You can add a variety of additions to the dry mix in the jar to make your very own version of this recipe. Try 125g of chocolate chips; 150g currants; 100g chopped pistachios; 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon; or 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest.

I looked through every single sugar cookie recipe on this site and i decided to choose this one. It simply looked and sounded the best. I made these cookies and i was astonished! They are easy and fun to make and they taste unbelievable! The thing was, i didnt put in the sour cream. I thought that was a very unnecessary item. They turned out better than i could have hoped. I have no trouble saying that they are the best cookies i have ever made. My family loves them! Im going to give them out as gifts to all my friends for the holidays! This recipe was terrible! I made a double batch of these and refrigerated both overnight. Both batches were still VERY crumbly the next day! I tried a couple different things to get the batter to stay together, but nothing worked.
