About this recipe: These are beautiful, impressive and pretty as Christmas presents, decorations or just Christmas snacks.

Makes: 1 dozen biscuits

  • 175g plain flour
  • 75g butter
  • 3 tablespoons caster sugar
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 egg white
  • hard sweets of assorted colours

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4 and prepare baking trays by lining them with baking parchment (no flour and butter won't do for this recipe).
  2. Put flour into a mixing bowl and mix in the butter using a wooden spoon or your hands.
  3. Stir in the sugar, orange juice and egg white and stir until it makes a soft dough. It will be more like bread dough than cookie dough. Knead the dough for a minute.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough, cut out shapes and place on the baking tray. Then using a small cutter (or knife if you don't have one) cut out a small shape in the centre so you have a outline.
  5. Make a hole in a top of the biscuit with a skewer so you can string ribbon through it to hang it on the tree!
  6. Place in oven for 4 minutes. Then place a hard sweet in the centre of each biscuit, and bake for a further 10 minutes.
  7. Take out of the oven, using the skewer re-pierce the hole. Leave them to cool for 5 minutes until the sweets harden. Then ta daaa!


If you do not like orange flavored things you still need a liquid so milk would suffice and you can use vanilla essence or cinnamon instead.
