Sift the flour into a bowl then mix in the sugar, Ovaltine® and dried fruit before stirring in the golden syrup and beaten egg. Add just enough milk to give a dropping consistency. Turn into a greased and floured loaf tin.
Bake in a preheated 140 C / Gas 2 oven for about 3 hours or until the top of the cake is golden and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake emerges cleanly.
Turn onto a wire rack and allow to cool completely before serving.
