About this recipe: This easy soda bread with wholegrain and white spelt doesn't need any time to rise and is ready in about 1 hour.

Makes: 1 loaf

  • 310g (11 oz) wholegrain spelt flour
  • 140g (5 oz) white spelt flour
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 40g chopped walnuts
  • 600ml (1 pt) buttermilk, more if necessary

Prep:10min  ›  Cook:50min  ›  Ready in:1hr 

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4 and line a 2 lb loaf tin.
  2. Put all the dry ingredients into a bowl and mix in the buttermilk with a fork. Pour mixture into the prepared tin.
  3. Bake for approximately 50 minutes, until the bread sounds hollow when tapped from the bottom.

This wasn't like the dough wheat flour soda bread makes as it was very runny! Quite dense but okay toasted - 17 May 2015
