- 6 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and diced
- 250g caster sugar
- 1 whole clove or cinnamon stick
- 200g plain flour
- 120g butter

- Put the apple chunks into a pan, add three quarters of the sugar, the cinnamon stick or clove and cover. Allow to stew gently for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. Keep checking as they can easily burn at the beginning.
- Check that the fruit is cooked by mashing it a bit with the wooden spoon. The apples should be soft but not pureed. Put the apples into a baking dish and allow to cool. Remove clove or cinnamon stick.
- Mix the flour, remaining sugar and butter with your fingers in a bowl until it becomes like a breadcrumb consistency.
- Preheat the oven to 150 C / Gas 2.
- Cover the stewed apples with the crumble topping, without pressing down.
- Bake the apple crumble for 30 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown and crunchy.
- Serve the crumble with cream, custard or ice cream.

Very easy to prepare and very tasty - 06 Sep 2017
Really delicious. I had one big Bramley apple in the fridge so added this also as well as the granny smiths. Also I didn't exactly measure the sugar i added when apples were stewing, just added it to our taste. The cinnamon stick gave a lovely subtle hint of the flavour but made such a huge difference it was remarkable- I dislike cinnamon but wanted to use it and it has converted my dislike of it! I cooked it on gas 3 instead of 2 as it seemed not to be cooking but that's probably just my oven. Really lovely and easy. - 30 Aug 2015
