Basic fairy cakes

    These little dairy free cakes are the basic cakes all kids can make from 3 years old on rainy days or Sundays, and decorate with their own imagination. It only requires an adult to put them in the oven and take them out.

    • 200g margarine
    • 200g plain flour
    • 200g caster sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • sweets for decoration

    1. Preheat oven to 190 C / Gas 5.
    2. Add all ingredients to a bowl and whisk till creamy.
    3. Place 12 cases on a baking tray and fill them only to about 3/4.
    4. Place in oven until a knife comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Do not open oven until at least 16 minutes into baking, or the cakes will flop.
    5. Decorate as you like or eat plain.


    To make fairy cakes with currants, cherries or lemon, add about 50g of fruit or lemon to taste to the mixture in step 2.
