About this recipe: These spicy lentil burgers are a fantastic vegetarian option for those who love cooking on the barbecue for vegetarian meals. Serve in a soft bun with your favourite toppings and sauces.


Makes: 6 lentil burgers

  • 350g green lentils
  • olive oil, to taste
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small green chilli, seeded and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

  1. Preheat the barbecue to a medium heat.
  2. Bring a saucepan of water to the boil and add the lentils. Cook for 20 minutes until soft. Drain, mash, then set aside.
  3. Meanwhile, heat the oil and add the onion, garlic and chilli. Cook and stir for 5 minutes until soft. Add to the mashed lentils along with the other ingredients. Form into 6 burger patties and dust in flour.
  4. Barbecue for 5 to 8 minutes on each side until golden brown.
