Tasty apple Charlotte

    This lovely apple Charlotte is comforting and tasty, perfect for using up the autumn apple bounty. Serve hot with vanilla ice cream.

    Serves: 6 

    • 6 large apples - peeled, cored and sliced thinly
    • 85g butter
    • 110g soft brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • zest and juice of 1 lemon
    • 1/2 large baguette, sliced into rounds

    1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a round pie dish.
    2. In a saucepan over a medium heat, combine the apples, half the butter, half of the sugar, the nutmeg and lemon juice. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 20 minutes until the fruit softens.
    3. Meanwhile, remove the crust from the baguette rounds and butter one side with the remainder of the butter.
    4. Spoon the apple into the prepared dish then top with the buttered bread. Sprinkle the remaining sugar on top.
    5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 30 minutes until the bread is golden brown and the filling is piping hot. Remove from the oven and serve hot.
