Chocolate Madeira cake

    Chocolate Madeira cake is sure to satisfy all of the chocolate lovers out there! Moist, rich and ideal for cake sales, picnics or afternoon tea - this cake is a real crowd pleaser.

    Serves: 8 

    • 115g butter, at room temperature
    • 115g golden caster sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • 115g self raising flour
    • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
    • 2 tablespoons milk
    • chocolate shavings, to decorate

    1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4 and grease and line an 18cm cake tin with baking parchment.
    2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and the sugar until pale and fluffy then beat in the eggs, one at a time until the mixture is smooth. Sift in the flour and cocoa powder and mix well. Finally, beat in the milk. Spoon into the prepared cake tin and smooth the top.
    3. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes until risen and firm and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool in the tin. Once cooled, remove from the tin and place on a serving plate. Decorate with chocolate shavings and slice and serve.

    Very easy to make. Simple list of ingredients. Lovely flavour, moist but not sticky or overly sweet. Made it for Hallowe'en, doubled the portions to make two cakes, sandwiched with strawberry jam and orange fondant icing to top. I made it with soya margarine and lactose free milk  -  30 Oct 2015


    I have been asked to make this but in a 8" square Can you tell me if the ingredients are the same for a 8" round Would be grateful if any one can help  -  26 Nov 2016


    Thank you for this absolutely yummy and extremely simple recipe. The cake turned out delicious. I added a bit of orange rind, less than half teaspoon and it gave a wonderful hint of orange to it. Will definitely repeat.  -  02 Apr 2016
