About this recipe: It will take you longer to clean up your food processor than preparing this foolproof houmous. Six ingredients are all it takes to prepare this dip. Use this houmous as a sandwich spread or enjoy it on its own with seedless cucumber cut into batons. If you are planning to serve this houmous for guests, all you need is a light sprinkling of ground cumin or sumac atop the dip.

Serves: 8 

  • 2 (400g) tins chickpeas in water, drained and rinsed
  • 2 large garlic cloves, peeled and ends trimmed
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 4 tablespoons tahini
  • 5 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 8 tablespoons unrefined sesame oil

  1. Add all ingredients to a food processor and blend until smooth. Occasionally stop the food processor to scrape the sides.


You can substitute the sesame oil for olive oil but the latter does not compare in flavour with the former. Be careful not to use toasted sesame oil as it has a completely different flavour profile. Tahini is pulped sesame seeds, and it can vary in flavour. When in doubt, start with half the amount of tahini in this recipe and add more according to your tastes.
