About this recipe: This vibrant and flavourful German red cabbage recipe was given to us by a friend in Berlin. Freezer friendly and delicious alongside pork or poultry, serve hot or cold.


Serves: 12 

  • 900g red cabbage, shredded
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cooking apples - peeled, cored and chopped finely
  • 3 tablespoons caster sugar
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 4 tablespoons dry cider
  • 1 tablespoon salted butter
  • salt and pepper, to taste

  1. Preheat the oven to 150 C / Gas 2.
  2. Combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well. Transfer to a baking dish.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours until the cabbage is tender and the flavours have infused together. Remove from the oven and enjoy warm or allow to cool to room temperature.
