About this recipe: This easy peasy shepherd's pie is a great recipe for quick but tasty comfort food and serves about four.

Serves: 4 

  • oil, as needed for cooking
  • 960g lamb mince
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 8 large potatoes
  • butter, to taste
  • milk, to taste
  • mixed herbs, to taste
  • gravy, to taste
  • 1 stock cube
  • grated cheese, to taste (optional)

  1. Warm a little oil in a large frying pan. Add the mince and cook and stir to brown then add the garlic and onion. Cook until the meat is no longer pink and the onions are tender.
  2. Peel the potatoes and boil in a saucepan of boiling water until soft, then drain. Add some butter and milk to taste and mash together.
  3. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6.
  4. Place the mince, onion and garlic in an ovenproof dish. Add the mixed herbs, gravy and crumble the stock cube in and mix.
  5. Top with the mashed potato and use the back of a fork to press evenly over the lamb. Top with cheese to taste, if using.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes until the potato is golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve hot.
