This is a classic cake that I used to bake with my grandma as a small child. It tastes heavenly yet homely, a recipe passed down generations. I hope that you enjoy this delight as much as me and Nana did before she departed.
Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a 28x18cm cake tin.
Put all the ingredients in a bowl and beat with a wooden spoon or an electric whisk until smooth and creamy. Spoon into the tin and level out the surface.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until risen and golden brown. Remove from the oven and leave in the tin for about 10 minutes to cool and then turn upside down on a cooling rack and leave to cool completely before slicing and serving.
