Scrumptious home made bread

    This recipe never fails and is a family favourite. To experiment, add seeds and omit the wholemeal flour for white for a traditional family loaf (though it's more flavour if you follow my recipe). 10 minutes to prepare and mix, 40 minutes raising and 30 minutes to cook.

    Makes: 1 900g scrumptious home made bread

    • 250g wholemeal bread flour
    • 500g strong white bread flour
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 (7g) sachet fast action dried yeast
    • 25g butter
    • 350ml warm water

    1. Lightly grease a 900g (2 lb) loaf tin with olive oil.
    2. Using a heavy duty mixer, place all ingredients into the bowl and mix on low setting until combined, mix for a further 5 minutes on medium mix.
    3. Turn out on lightly floured board and loosely form into the shape of your tin. Place in tin, cover and leave to rise for 40 minutes or until doubled in size
    4. Preheat the oven to 220 C / Gas 7.
    5. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes until golden brown. The bread should sound hollow when tapped at the base. Turn out onto a cooling rack to cool before slicing and enjoying.


    Alternative add 50g mixed seeds or just use 750g of either wholemeal or plain white flour. I've also glazed with egg and put black seed and poppy seeds on the top.
