Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases.
In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt and set aside. In a separate bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, one at at time until pale and creamy and then mix in the vanilla extract. To the butter and egg mixture, add the flour in thirds, alternating with the milk. Spoon the mixture into the prepared paper cases, filling only to half way to allow for a good rise.
Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until risen and firm and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and decorate as desired.
